ABBOTSFORD, September 21, 2017—“ Tapping into the export market is like breaking through another glass ceiling for many women business owners,” says Barbara Mowat, President and Founder of GroYourBizTM “That’s why we’re creating an exciting new way for women entrepreneurs to help each other access foreign buyers.”
Coinciding with the provisional application of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on September 21, GroYourBizTM along with partner Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT) is creating a Virtual Global Export Board for interested women business owners to join. This initiative will provide a monthly peer business advisory group of 16 or more women to draw upon the skills, expertise, inspiration and energy of like-minded entrepreneurs offering practical solutions to utilize the opportunities created in Canada and the EU under CETA.
“CETA is a progressive free trade agreement which covers virtually all sectors and aspects of Canada-EU trade in order to eliminate or reduce barriers,” explains Sanjeev Chowdhury, Director of the Free Trade Agreement Promotion Task Force of Global Affairs Canada. Prior to CETA, only 25 percent of EU tariff lines on Canadian goods were duty-free, but when CETA is provisionally aplied, 98% of Canada’s exports to the EU will be completely duty free. CETA will increase Canadian-EU trade by $8 billion a year. Chowdhury congratulates GroYourBiz’s new approach: “Kudos to them for paving the way for women entrepreneurs to take advantage of this new trade agreement.”
GroYourBiz is building on its successful approach to using advisory boards to help small business owners expand their operations and be more successful. Its advisory boards exist all across Canada with boards in the UK and the US and plans to expand elsewhere. “The critical difference with the new board is to utilize TELUS Business Connects technology and create virtual boards,” states Mowat. “This will assist women entrepreneurs in different countries to reach out to each other and share experiences and strategies.” TELUS has been a strategic alliance supporting GroYourBiz since its inception. Suzanne Trusdale, Vice President of TELUS Small Business Solutions, “I’m a strong advocate for diversity and I’m passionate about helping women entrepreneurs succeed. Using technology for global growth breaks down barriers.”
Andrea Ewart, International President of OWIT stresses the advantages of supportive networks: “Many of the women we work with find that building a global enterprise is very difficult to achieve. Guided by an expert facilitator, peer advisory boards are especially suitable for businesses wanting to move to the next level. This virtual advisory board will focus on ways that OWIT’s women entrepreneurs in Canada and the EU can package, present and pitch to take advantage of the export opportunities created by the CETA.”
Mairead Lavery, Senior Vice-President of Business Development at Export Development Canada, agrees: “I commend this initiative for helping to support women in business to become more successful exporters. This is great for our economy.”
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) makes a new chapter in the relationship between the European Union and Canada. This deal will increase jobs, strengthen economic relations and promote new economic opportunities for Canadian and European business.

GroYourBiz Toronto’s 3rd Annual Fireside Chat
On June 7th, GroYourBiz held their 3rd annual Fireside Chat in Toronto with amazing women sharing their best business practices.
Thank you BMO for the facility and a big thank you to Marg Hachey for coordinating this powerful event.
THANKS to all who attended EXCELerate 2017: GroYourBiz with the Speed of Collaboration!
In capturing the outcomes of the conference, I couldn’t say it better than one of our most prestigious speakers, Dr. Aladar Szalay, leading scientist/professor on immunotherapy.
Barbara Mowat, President & Founder, GroYourBiz and EXCELerate.
“Dear Barbara, today is Memorial Day in the US and I have prepared an urgent to do list, where your name and the thank you for the impressively organized meeting was the first line. If we reconstruct the entire meeting the conclusion is overwhelming: demonstration of the power and business leadership role of highly educated women in our society today both in the western democracies including indigenous people, as well as in the entire world from Africa, India and in the war torn nations in the middle and Far East was very successful. Thank you and your very capable associates to put together this magnificent, global program demonstrating role of education, risk taking, proud self-confidence, trustworthiness and that of hard, hard work which resulted in many successful businesses pioneered by woman. All that was silently and very professionally articulated, without sarcasm and cynicism, and did not downgrade the traditionally male CEO role in the business world today. You also very successfully exemplified the uplift and young talent support of very recent immigrants to Canada with the beautiful poetry of an orphan high school girl and with the 27 year old CEO with the automated, computerized camera system for detecting skin cancer, who just graduated from UBC. Recognizing, attracting talent and supporting their free inventions regardless of national origin, made our North American continent a world leader in science, medicine and business today and will warrant the continuous leadership for future generations. Such future generations will proudly recognize the role their mothers in their families as well as in the business world.”

Women in Business Winners Honoured
Former BCTA Board Member & Chair Wins Business Leadership Award
March 15, 2015
Hanne Madsen, former President of DanFoss Couriers and Freight and member of our Board of Directors (as well as Chair, 2002-04), won a Corporate/Leadership Award on March 5, 2015, at the 6th Annual Surrey Women in Business Awards Luncheon hosted by the Surrey Board of Trade.
The annual awards program recognizes the hard work of Surrey’s businesswomen and their contributions to the community. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the dearth of women directors in Canadian companies – according to the Surrey Board of Trade, “more than half the companies in Canada have no female directors. And only 2 percent of chairs and chief executives in Canada are women.”
Hanne received her award for leadership as an Expert Board Chair for GrowYourBiz™, an initiative that provides resources to women entrepreneurs, including a monthly “Board” meeting of 15 to 20 women per group and involvement of an alliance of private sector organizations (BMO, Bank of Montreal, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin, and TELUS), working together to foster and support small-medium enterprises.
Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and MP for Papineau, Quebec, was the keynote speaker at the event.
Hanne Madsen is standing to Mr. Trudeau’s right.
Hanne served on BCTA’s Board for 14 years. In 2002, she was appointed Chair for a two-year term and to date she remains the only woman to have attained that position since our association’s founding in 1913. Hanne was also a founding director of the Trucking Safety Council of BC. In 2008, BCTA presented her with the Service to the Industry Award and in 2012 she was appointed a member of Diversity 50 by the Canadian Board Diversity Council, chosen from a national search of men and women qualified for corporate board service.
Active in her community, Hanne is currently a Director of Sun Peaks Nordic Club and a volunteer facilitator for Junior Achievement. She is a member of the WEB Alliance of Women’s Business networks and participates in the Kickstart mentorship program at Thompson Rivers University. She holds her Certificate of Executive Management from the Segal Graduate School of Business at SFU as well as her Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University. Hanne resides in South Surrey with her husband and together they enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle.
Hanne is also the first BCTA member to take advantage of our new Retired Members category. We’re proud that Hanne has chosen to continue her involvement in BCTA. Congratulations!
For a complete list of award winners, please visit the Surrey Board of Trade Women in Business website.

And the audience heard that there are 821,000 self-employed women, contributing $18 billion to Canada’s economy. We are very proud of Hanne and her willingness to share her valuable knowledge with other women entrepreneurs.

Opinion: Financial institutions should treat women well
Perception that women don’t receive equal treatment must change
Financial services are integral to the lives of all Canadians, but a new report suggests the financial services industry has work to do to improve how it looks after the financial and business needs of women. Consider that women currently control one-third of all wealth in North America, a number growing at a rate of eight per cent annually. Also, the number of self-employed women in Canada has risen to nearly one million. In B.C. alone, women form 37 per cent of the self-employed, higher than the national average. Despite this clear strength for women with wealth and entrepreneurship, a BMO poll reveals most Canadians think women don’t receive the same level of support from financial services providers compared with men: • Sixty-four per cent of Canadians (70 per cent women) believe male clients are treated in a preferential way over female clients by the financial services industry. • Further, 67 per cent (74 per cent women) feel men are taken more seriously by the sector. • Seventy-nine per cent of Canadians (81 per cent women) believe when a male-female couple meets with a financial professional, the employee tends to view the male client as the primary decision maker. While polling also suggests 85 per cent of Canadians — and 83 per cent of women — feel the financial services sector is doing a better job of treating female customers more equitably compared with 20 years ago, we must ensure continued momentum. All financial services providers must do whatever they can to ensure any less favourable treatment of women — or even just the perception of it — comes to an end. It’s the equitable and correct thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. We must also note research on the impact of the participation of women in the business world. Catalyst Canada — an organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for women and business — has found companies with women on boards provide an 84-per-cent better return on sales, a 60-per-cent better return on invested capital and a 46-per-cent better return on equity. Fortunately, action is already being taken, particularly to support women entrepreneurs. As an example, my bank, BMO Bank of Montreal, is making an additional $2 billion in credit available to women-owned businesses across Canada over the next three years. Making more lending available to these entrepreneurs gives them more certainty of credit to grow and create new jobs. This is of particular benefit given what women entrepreneurs are telling us about the future of their businesses. Our recent polling shows they are confident in the Canadian economy, with 66 per cent having a positive economic outlook for the coming year and nearly half expecting their businesses will grow in 2015. With this level of confidence, we can look forward to women-owned businesses boosting productivity and expanding into new markets, both at home and abroad. Meanwhile, BMO has formed 13 regional commercial banking offices led by senior leaders in markets dedicated to serving small to medium sized business, and an important part of their mandate is to address the growing needs of women in business. An important focus for them will be the professional services sector — areas such as pharmaceutical, veterinary and accounting — which typically attract more women. Industry data shows the professional services sector created 85,000 jobs in 2013 and now represents the fourth-largest sector by employment in Canada, and about 60 per cent of pharmacists are women.

BMO to Boost Credit To Women Business Owners by up to $2 Billion
TORONTO, November 27, 2014 – BMO Bank of Montreal is making an additional $2 billion in credit available to women-owned businesses across Canada over the next three years. “We’re here to help, making more of our balance sheet available to women entrepreneurs so they have more certainty of credit to grow and create new jobs,” said Steve Murphy, Head of Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal. “Women business owners have told us they are confident in the Canadian economy, with 66 per cent having a positive economic outlook for the upcoming year and nearly half expecting their businesses will grow in 2015. They are looking to boost productivity and expand into new markets, both at home and abroad,” added Mr. Murphy. Capital spending by small- and medium-sized enterprises should see a lift given relatively strong finances and low interest rates, according to Jennifer Lee, Senior Economist, BMO Capital Markets. “The number of self-employed women in Canada has risen to nearly one million, up 17 per cent in the past decade compared to a rise of five per cent for self-employed men.” Sonya Kunkel, Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President Talent Strategies, BMO Financial Group, noted that women are making their mark in the boardroom as well. “Research conducted by Catalyst Canada shows companies with women on boards provide an 84 per cent better return on sales, a 60 per cent better return on invested capital and a 46 per cent better return on equity.” About BMO and Women Entrepreneurs BMO Bank of Montreal has a long history of championing the advancement of women in Canadian business.
