GroYourBiz BC members, along with high profile attendees from Vancouver community had the privilege of listening to Leah Lizarondo, CEO & Co-Founder of 412 Food Rescue. 412 Food Rescue is a social enterprise with a technology, logistics and civic engagement model that aims to fight hunger and promote sustainability by preventing perfectly good food from entering the waste stream and directly distributing to organizations that benefit those who are food insecure. Their mobile app, Food Rescue Hero, directs a network of over 12,000 volunteers in 5 cities and transports over 7 million pounds of surplus food to a network of over 600 non-profits, ensuring perfectly good food feeds people not landfills. Her food recovery solution bridges the disconnect between the 40% of food that goes to waste and the 1 in 7 people experiencing food insecurity in the United States.
What do we do with all the food that goes to landfills in Canada, with a focus on Vancouver?
Here are some depressing statistics:
- 58% of all food produced in Canada is wasted or lost. 32% of this food could have been rescued by an app (Food Rescue Hero) to support people who are food insecure.
- 1 in 9 households in BC go hungry
- 1 in 6 children in BC live without food security
- Single moms have the highest level of food insecurity at 34%
Vancouver Food Runners will be launching the Food Rescue Hero app in February 2020 in Vancouver. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact: tristan@foodrunners.com
